The tide
Conventionally named “high water” a flood that exceeds the value of Venice 80 cm above zero tide gauge Punta Health: at this altitude there are questions of transport and pedestrian traffic on the lowest points of the city (Piazza San Marco). When the tide is over 100 cm, the phenomenon begins to affect larger sections of city driving.
The tide observed in Venice can be thought of as the sum of two components: the astronomical tide, related to the motion of celestial bodies, mainly Moon and Sun, and the meteorological contribution due to the state of the atmosphere. Increased frequency of events of high water in Venice in recent decades, have contributed to phenomena such as eustatic (sea level rise) and the subsidence (ground subsidence due to natural or man-made).
