Residents of Venice
The depopulation of Venice is available in real time at the pharmacy field Moretti S. Bortolomio a stone's throw from the Rialto Bridge.
Located in the window of the pharmacy you will find a bright screen that shows in real time the number of updated inhabitants (residents)
of historic Venice.
- In 1950 were 180.000 inhabitants
- In 1966 were 121.000 inhabitants
- Today 4 March 2011 are 59.635 of these more than 3.000 are foreigners.

Over the last 50 years the center has lost almost two-thirds of its inhabitants: vale a dire che in media 2.300 people a year leave this part of town. The decline in births, the increase in the mortality rate, consistently negative net migration, the difficulty in finding a home, the high cost of living (data provided by the Statistical Office of the City in January 2003 have shown that Venice is among the cities with the highest level of price increase on an annual basis) are some of the causes of this decline in the number of "real Venetian” (residents) and the consequent increase in the average of the local population.
… "Denaturalization" of the Venetian community
These factors have been compounded, especially in the last decade, effects "side effects caused by the massive monoculture of tourism in the economy of the city. The obvious change of use of many homes in the historic center (increasingly turned into inns, Pensions, Hotels and B&B), accompanied by the closure of many grocery stores converted into businesses targeted at tourists, are examples that clearly illustrate the trend of development that the lagoon city is following. If we consider also the increase in the number of "temporary residents" (students and off-site workers domiciled but not resident in the city) is difficult to understand why the historic center of Venice is undergoing a "denaturalization" of his community with the consequent disappearance of those socio-economic characteristics that defined the ancient lagoon city.
An example: Transport
An example of such change is given by the transport sector. Before the Austrians built the Liberty Bridge (1846), the only way to reach the mainland was the rowing boat. This need has developed over the centuries and the original technical specifications is Rowing, both shipbuilding. Today the need to move quickly from one place to another with as little effort as possible, has reduced significantly the number of rowing boats and young people engaged in Venetian rowing with serious economic impacts, cultural and environmental. The advent of motor boats, in fact, over the closure of old squeri who failed to survive the technological competition, caused a significant increase in the wave, source today of serious damage to the entire lagoon system, and the almost total disappearance of that particular category of "squeraioli" typical of Venetian society.
What prospects for the city?
Venice, then, unique city, among the safest in Europe (violent crime is rare and crime is lower than that of other cities), with an urban fabric can guarantee intense social relationships, walking without traffic and smog, ideal, in terms of space and security, for children of all ages, risks becoming an open-air museum, in a large "monumental park" devoid of the traditional features that have made for many centuries the unique Venetian culture.
