Venice. The Four Seasons
Lisa St. Aubin de Terán

My first forays there were between March and May, organizing the relatively simply business of buying a flat. I was steered and often towed through these early stages by the expert hand of the estate agents in whose small window in the Campo Santo Stefano we had first seen the property advertisement.
The wisteria was in full flower, dragging its supple branches down towards the water while exuding a heavy drowsy scent that stole most of my concentration from the Signora Cera. None of the fines, penalties or sanctions that she described could detract in any way from the first thrill not only of living in Venice but of becoming a Venetian. The Signora Cera described to me, with what I  now realize was enclyclopaeic breadth, all the minutiae of  residency in a Venetiann condominion while I gazed at the Queen of the Adriatic.
It was only after our furniture had sat in a warehouse at the docks for two months, stopped in its tracks for want of a number of a miniature and apparently meaningless declarations (all signed and countersigned and duplicated), that I became a temporary white collar worker, amassing and circulating the family  papers.

Venezia.

“Sometimes I sit in my small  blue study like a foregin fish in a glass bowl swamped with food, and the fishbowl turns muddy with the richness of this new diet. Sometimes I front-crawl my way into the huge open-air theater of San Marco to stare and linger over a drink and recover from the cultural bloat that too much contemplation of the city can provoke… Venice has a strange stimulus that seems to pass directly into emotion, bypassing the usual thought processes. To wander arond her, to drift or push through her, is as natural and as sensuous as a caress. Her chipped and speckled mirrors seem to hold a built-in underwater reflection. Glitter and tarnish sit side by side.”

Lisa St Aubin de Terán, the British novelist, moved to Venice in 1986 with her family. In this inimitably evocative account, she describes her experience of living as a foreigner in one of the most mesmerizing and beautiful cities of the world. With Mick Lindberg’s atmospheric photographs, she captures the many moods and faces of Venice through the seasons, both its visual splendors and its hidden social rituals.

Lisa St Aubin de Terán, though born and educated in London, has spent most of her adult life traveling. After seven years farming in Venezuela, she moved to Italy in 1983, settling in Venice in 1986 with her husband, the painter Robbie Dugg-Scott. She has published ten works of fiction and non-fiction, including Keepers of the House, a Slow Train to Milan and Joanna.

Ha pubblicato dieci opere narrative e di saggistica, ivi incluse Keepers of the House, A Slow Train to Milan e Joanna.
